When the beta comes… | Jacksonville man pleads guilty to first-degree murder

A man pleaded guilty Tuesday to first degree murder in the death of a man who died from injuries sustained in a crash that was caught on video.

Jacob Sargent, 19, of New Hope, was arrested Friday after he drove his car into a man on a sidewalk in the city’s downtown area on Aug. 12.

Sarget, who had no previous convictions, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years to life in prison.

The victim, 19-year-old Caleb Blevins, was found unconscious in the street after a car crash on Aug, 12, 2017.

The crash captured on a surveillance camera occurred when Sargets car crashed into Blevines car.

The man died at the scene, but Blevinas remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Sargeants court appearance was postponed Tuesday because of the case.

A bail hearing was set for Dec. 6.

“The trial will go ahead with the assistance of our attorney,” Crown attorney Christopher Ainsworth said in a statement after Sargeets court appearance.

“Mr. Sager has been charged with murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence.”

Ainswill said the Crown was considering “admitting the defence to a new trial” and that he would make a decision about a sentence at a later date.

He added that the Crown has already been “considered for the death penalty,” but that a decision would be made in the next few weeks.

In March, Sargeet pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Svalant was ordered to complete 60 hours of community service and must register as a sex offender for five years.

Blevins family is also upset with the Crown’s handling of the incident.

They said Sargt’s behaviour was out of character for someone who had been a student at the University of South Florida.

“They were going to go after him and that’s how they’re going to do it,” said Blevinson’s father, David Bleviner.

Ainsworth defended his decision to not seek a bail hearing earlier in the day.

“We’re just going to continue to fight for Caleb’s rights,” he said.

The Crown did not respond to a request for comment.
